Where Is the Takeoff Point for Hot Air Balloons in Cappadocia?

The launch fields lie in the valleys immediately around Göreme, and nobody knows which one until the morning itself. A driver collects you from your hotel and takes you there.

Updated 16 October 2026

In shortThe takeoff points are authorised fields in the valleys around Göreme, inside the designated LTB1 (Kapadokya) area, which is split into Sectors A, B and C plus secondary Regions 1 to 5. The exact field is chosen on the morning from the wind and the cleared sectors, so it is never fixed in advance. A vehicle collects you from your hotel roughly 60 to 90 minutes before sunrise and drives you out, about 30 minutes each way.

The launch fields sit in the valleys around Göreme

Balloons lift off from flat ground in the valley floors and open fields ringing Göreme village, with the northern fields closest to Çavuşin, about 5 km north of town. The whole area is administered as the designated LTB1 (Kapadokya) balloon area, divided into Sectors A, B and C with secondary flight Regions 1 to 5, and the separate authorised area at Nevşehir Çat is assessed on its own. No public list of individual field names or coordinates exists, and the Slot Service Centre issues its clearance decisions sector by sector.

Göreme is a town of about 2,429 residents according to its own municipality, 15 km east of Nevşehir and 5 km west of Ürgüp, which is why everything about a balloon morning happens within a few kilometres. The volcanic landscape the fields sit in, between Erciyes and Hasan Dağı, is dated by the municipality to roughly 60 million years ago, and the chimneys you drift past were cut into churches, chapels and dwellings between the 4th and 13th centuries.

The flight area itself is recorded at 1,224 m elevation by Kapadokya University's balloon research centre, high enough that the usable air temperature for a loaded passenger basket tops out around 15°C. Operators check two things before using a field in the morning: that temperature ceiling and the 10-knot wind limit for commercial passenger flights.

Why the exact launch field is only assigned on the morning

The pilot picks the field on the day from the forecast wind direction, and the flight direction and landing area follow from that choice. Operators state plainly that no particular valley can be guaranteed, and the landing site is not known in advance. If you have read that a tour launches from Love Valley, treat that as one possible outcome out of many.

Clearance is published per sector for each dated flight window by the Slot Service Centre, and under a red or yellow flag no departure clearance exists for commercial flights at all; only instructor-led training flights may proceed, after contacting SHGM officials. A green flag does not finish the job either, because the final decision to launch rests with the pilot and the operator. Out of the full calendar in 2025, the fields were in use on 223 mornings; on the other 140 or so no sector was cleared and nothing left the ground.

Weather also moves the field between sectors on consecutive mornings, so two travellers on the same tour in the same week can end up in completely different places. Build your plans around the date and the pickup time you are given.

Pickup for Göreme balloon flights happens at your hotel

There is no central meeting point and no way to reach the field yourself. Pickup is from your own hotel door, and hotel pickups for the Göreme launch fields are drawn from Göreme, Ürgüp, Avanos and Uçhisar. The transfer runs roughly 30 minutes in each direction, which is why the transport is part of the flight tour rather than something you arrange separately.

Collection falls about 60 to 90 minutes before sunrise, nearer the longer end the further your bed sits from the field. Your alarm follows the calendar rather than the tour: the sun comes up over Göreme at about 05:15 at the June solstice and about 07:53 at the December solstice, with roughly 06:03 in mid-April and 06:48 in mid-October in between, which puts a June pickup at your door near 04:15. Nobody can hand you that figure when you book; it arrives the night before, once the flight plan for the following morning has been drawn up.

Sleeping in Göreme itself rather than Ürgüp or Avanos shortens that drive and buys you sleep in midsummer. It also puts you where the balloons rise if the flags close the dawn and you end up watching from the ground instead.

Love Valley, the Göreme valleys and the Çavuşin side

Flights commonly track over Göreme, Love Valley, Rose Valley, Red Valley and Çavuşin, and that is the ground you look down on once you are up, with none of it promised when you book. Love Valley is reached from the north by a dirt road that only takes two-wheel-drive vehicles in dry weather, and balloons often land there. Rose Valley lies about 2 km north of Göreme town, and the Büyük and Küçük Kılıçlar valleys sit between Göreme Valley and Aktepe, immediately north of the village.

Once the basket leaves the field the climb stays deliberately low, from tree level to about 900 metres above the ground, and most of the drifting happens somewhere between 300 and 1,000 metres. The Civil Aviation Authority's limit, 6,000 feet on weekdays and 8,000 feet at weekends, is nowhere near what a valley sightseeing run needs, since the chimneys are the point and pilots stay down among them.

Landing happens wherever the wind allows, with the chase crew following the balloon by road and meeting it on the ground. When conditions line up, a balloon can come back down on the same point it lifted off from. Either way the vehicle that collected you is the vehicle that takes you back to the hotel, which is why the listed 3.5-hour and 3-hour durations cover the whole morning door to door and not the time airborne.

What the morning actually costs you in hours

The listed duration is the whole morning. Of the 3.5 hours or 3 hours on the booking page, about 30 minutes go on inflation at the field while flat fabric turns into a standing balloon, 60 to 90 minutes on the flight, half an hour on the ceremony after landing and some 30 minutes on the drive in each direction.

Dress for standing around a cold field before dawn, because the pre-flight hour is the coldest of the day. The Nevşehir station's average daily minimum is 13.7°C in July and 13.6°C in August, around 15°C under the daytime high, and it drops through 10.5°C in September, 8.9°C in May, 6.8°C in October and 5.1°C in April to −3.6°C in January. Wear closed flat-soled walking or sports shoes with grip and layers you can shed, and leave the sandals and heels behind for a field at 1,224 m.

Which morning to book, and how long to stay

Three nights in Göreme is the minimum that makes the launch-field lottery survivable, with the flight pencilled in for your first full morning. With only 223 flyable days recorded in 2025, roughly four mornings in ten produce nothing, and keeping mornings two and three spare turns a red flag into a lie-in rather than a lost trip. Do not treat the warm months as insurance: the official meteorological assessment singles out March and April as the windiest and weakest months for take-off clearance.

Check the Slot Service Centre's flag page yourself the evening before and again when you wake, instead of waiting for a phone call. It publishes a red, yellow or green flag per sector for each dated window, and knowing which way it went lets you decide about dinner and alarm clocks the night before.

Fly in the morning period only. A second window exists on paper, from 14:00 until 30 minutes after sunset, but across the whole of 2019 it was opened on 28 days and only 26 percent of that capacity was taken up, and the meteorological study rates afternoon flying unsafe in most months. Reserve well before you arrive: the published lead time is 2 to 4 weeks for April to November, and June to August fills months out.

Questions people ask

Can I drive to the balloon launch site myself?

No. The field is assigned on the morning from the wind and the cleared sectors, and passengers are collected from their hotel and driven out, roughly 30 minutes each way. There is no central meeting point and no way to know the field in advance, so the transfer is part of the flight tour.

Do balloons really take off from Love Valley?

Flights commonly track over Love Valley, and balloons often land there, but the launch field, flight direction and landing area are all chosen on the day. Love Valley is reached from the north by a dirt road that is only passable by two-wheel-drive vehicles in dry weather. Treat it as part of the landscape you fly over rather than a guaranteed takeoff point.

How does the chase crew find the balloon after landing?

The crew follows the balloon by road through the valleys and meets it wherever the wind allows it to come down. If the wind cooperates, the landing point can be the launch field itself. Either way the same vehicle that collected you returns you to your hotel.

Which hotels get picked up for the Göreme launch fields?

Hotels in Göreme, Ürgüp, Avanos and Uçhisar are all on the pickup rounds for these fields. Collection falls about 60 to 90 minutes before sunrise, closer to 90 if your hotel is further from the field, so sleeping in Göreme itself buys you the shortest drive and the latest alarm.

Will I be told the takeoff time when I book?

No. The time reaches you the night before, once the flight plan for the following morning is settled. As a guide, published windows put lift-off around 05:00-06:00 in summer and 06:00-07:00 in winter, inside a morning period that opens 30 minutes before sunrise and closes at 11:00.
